He loses it on the way, but the two share a kiss and promise to keep writing to each other.Īs they grow up, we see how Takaki continues to have lingering feelings for his childhood friend, which jeopardises several potential relationships.Įventually, the two return back to the spot they watched the cherry blossoms for the first time as children and spot each other in passing. When Takaki learns he will be moving further away from her, he decides to see her one last time and gives her a letter confessing his feelings. Akari movies away, and the two begin to drift apart. We witness the beginnings of a friendship between Takaki and Akari Shinohara, who grow close because of their shared interests and seasonal allergies. It is split into three parts: Cherry Blossom, Cosmonaut and 5 Centimeters per Second. The film was created by Makoto Shinkai and followed the life of Takaki Tono. Nothing says “good cry,” like a love story of childhood friends who never end up together. RELATED: 16 Best Old Anime Movies That Can Be Considered Classics 3. A manga and novel were developed in the same year as the film and share some extra scenes and give their own take on the ending so that you can take your pick. However, its conclusion is left somewhat open-ended, leaving audiences to guess what eventually happens between the two. This film is more melancholy and features quiet music to match the tone of its characters. The age difference between Takao and Yukari illustrates how clumsily and disjointedly people mature, showing that even some adults don’t feel any more mature than teenagers. When he eventually learns who Yukari is and confesses his feelings to her, things don’t exactly go the way he planned. However, Yukari doesn’t open up about her life, while Takao shares almost everything about his. The two often encounter each other at the Shinjuku Gyeon National Garden during the rainy season. The film centres around two strangers: 15-year-old Takao Akizuki, an aspiring shoemaker, and 27-year-old Yukari Yukino, a mysterious woman he later learns to be the classical-Japanese teacher at his school. This Makoto Shinkai-directed short film was intended to be a story of “lonely sadness.” He used shoes as a metaphor for life and based it on the definition of the traditional Japanese word for “love.” Fortunately for fans, the film has a sweet, happy ending, so you don’t have to worry about aimlessly staring at a wall after finishing it.Ī Silent Voice explores themes of mental health, bullying, the friendship between a guy and a girl, disability and suicide. Depending on your camera, there are many ways to check your shutter count. It’s not always easy to access this data, however. Luckily, camera manufacturers build a tool into a camera to keep track of the shutter count. After all, the last thing you want is to have your shutter fail during the middle of an important shoot. If your camera is starting to get some age on it or you are looking at buying a used piece of gear, it can become important to check your shutter count to know how close you are to reaching the shutter’s limit. If you shoot 2,000 shots a week (not difficult for certain types of photography, such as weddings and events), you might only be looking at a year or two before hitting the shutter lifespan. Heavy shooters, though, will start to run into problems much sooner. It’s also common for camera shutters to last far longer than their official rating.įor casual shooters or even many semi-pro photographers, this could be enough to last for many years and longer than you would want to keep the camera. In most cameras, the shutter is rated for at least 100,000 to 200,000 shots, with top-tier pro models rated even higher. When this happens, you may have to either send the camera back to the manufacturer to replace the shutter mechanism–which is expensive and time-consuming–or get a new camera.įortunately, shutter mechanisms are built for a fairly large number of actuations. Over time, the forces involved in opening and closing the shutter are going to lead to the parts wearing out and the shutter mechanism breaking down. In order to stay open for such a short amount of time, it needs to start moving very quickly and then stop moving just as fast. This process also often moves incredibly quickly, which can subject them to a surprising amount of force:įor example, if you’re taking a picture in bright afternoon sunlight, your shutter may only be open for 1/1000 of a second or less. Then, a curtain will move from top to bottom, exposing the sensors, followed by another curtain covering it. It’s a mechanism that flips a DSLR’s mirror out of the way, built from tiny and delicate parts. It’s an important number that indicates the life expectancy of your camera. Shutter count is the amount of photos that your camera has taken. This is also very important when considering purchasing a used camera. As a camera gets older, it’s important to be aware of your camera’s shutter count. The most important are the shutter mechanism and the motor that flips up the mirror in a DSLR. Modern cameras have complicated electronics, but only a few moving parts. The game depends far too heavily on luck, important information is not readily available to the player, the controls are atrocious, and the game repeatedly crashes. Tl dr - Merchants of Kaidan is a "buy low"/"sell high" Trading Simulation game with a good presentation but that fails in pretty much every other area. It's a shoddy port of a game that relies far too heavily on luck, doesn't properly convey important information to players, has terrible interface issues, and just overall is not fun to play. I'm sure that those who can stick with it despite its many, many flaws will find some fun to be had in Merchants of Kaidan, but I personally cannot remember the last time I was this disappointed in a game. I mean, not enough to justify all the crashing this game is doing, but they're nice. I swear, I went into this game actually excited to play a good trading sim, and it seemed to want to do everything it could to make me absolutely hate it.Īt the very least, the game's visuals and music are pleasant enough. Thankfully, you can use the touchscreen for menus in handheld mode, but it's frustrating that this should even be necessary just to not have to be tortured by the tedium of selecting choices in menus.Īs if this wasn't bad enough, during my time playing this game, it outright crashed on me multiple times. This game wasn't made for consoles, and it shows. At multiple points, I was approached by someone who wanted to be taken to a specific place, but I wasn't given a chance to check my map before agreeing or refusing, and couldn't locate the place on the map afterward - there certainly wasn't anything highlighting the place or denoting it as a destination.Įven if you're fine with all of this oppressive difficulty and poor luck, and lack of helpful information, the game still makes playing it a frustrating chore, with menus that have you dragging a slow cursor across the screen instead of simply snapping to the options you can click on. and even if you find something that works well for you, misfortune could always strike anyway.Īlso, much of the information that you need is either nestled away in menus, or not available to you at all, and none of it is presented in a helpful or user-friendly manner. The costly business of simply getting from one place to another can lead to slim margins, and you're discouraged from exploiting a good route because it could lead to robbers attacking you. It doesn't help that the game is difficult enough as-is. whenever one of these events happens, it's always frustrating. Encouraged to bet on a race? Refuse and you may suffer unintended consequences from disheartened staff. A woman with empty buckets passes in front of your cart? Your luck stat goes down. Firstly, there are a lot of events in this game that are completely out of your control. In addition, you'll be investing in businesses, encountering events that can change your luck, and taking on quests that can help increase your fortune and status.Īll of this sounds good, but the game is plagued by problems. Here, you'll start by trading in just two resources, food and furs, and gradually move on to others as your status rises. Merchants of Kaidan is a Trading Simulation game with a focus on arbitrage, the practice of buying low in one location and selling high in another to turn a profit - compare this to games like Star Trader, Trade Wars, and Dope Wars, to give you an idea what you're in for. Other apps, such as Harvest and Paydirt, provide ways for appropriately tracking project work and billing for it, whereas OfficeTime only works for billable hours. Let's say I charge a flat rate of $200 for a face-to-face consulting session, or $5,000 for a website build, regardless of the amount of time spent on the project. For example, OfficeTime's invoicing and project tools don't handle flat-rate projects. You record expenses as if they were any other line item, which means you see them listed right alongside all your tracked time for any given project.Īlthough OfficeTime includes invoicing and expensing tools, it doesn't cover all situations and conditions that sometimes arise for freelancers. Line items can be expenses, too, such as stock photography you bought for a client's work or transportation to get to a meeting. There is a way to override this setting should you need to. If you begin recording a new task in OfficeTime when you already have a timer running, the app automatically pauses the active line item, rendering it impossible for you to accidentally bill two clients or record time for two tasks simultaneously. That wasn't the case with Everhour, which immediately stopped its timer the moment my computer detected it was offline. When testing Toggl, I cut my internet off suddenly to see what would happen to the timer, and it kept ticking away. Some online time-trackers, such as Toggl, have offline capabilities, though not all do. Seeing as OfficeTime is a desktop app, everything works offline. OfficeTime will then remind you of it via a pop-up message at a time you set. The reminder feature, which is unique to OfficeTime as far as I know, lets you enter any free-form text you want. From that same status menu icon, you can also pause and resume time tracking, quickly start tracking time on a new task, and create a reminder. In the Mac version, it also puts a display of the active timer in the status menu, so you can glance up and see how long you've been working on a task. Your timer will begin tracking time by the minute, which you can see in real time if you leave the window in view. When you're ready to get to work, you create a line item and press a play button on the far left side. You can assign projects to categories, too. Each project contains line items, and each line item can be assigned to a category, such as marketing, design, research, or whatever others you create. Line items are more or less the same thing as tasks, although here they can also be expenses. In OfficeTime, you have projects, line items, and categories. The syncing controls only appear in the iOS app, not the desktop apps. There is no option to sync between a Windows desktop app of OfficeTime and a Mac version of the app. If you choose to use both the desktop app and iOS app, you can sync your account among these devices, but only when they are connected to the same network (e.g., the same Wi-Fi). OfficeTime saves all your account data locally on your computer, or whatever storage repository you indicate during setup. OfficeTime is nimble enough to let you correct your missteps quickly as you go. Many professionals have this tacit knowledge at their fingertips, but sometimes it takes a little trial-and-error learning to correctly parse your work. To use OfficeTime (and really most time-tracking apps for that matter) effectively, you must spend a few minutes making sure you have a clear understanding of how your business projects are organized. As you set up the account, OfficeTime asks whether you want to start with some dummy data to help you get oriented, or if you want to jump into setting up your own work to track. To get OfficeTime, you download the Windows or Mac app, which comes with a free three-week trial period before you have to enter any credit card information. Another app called TopTracker is totally free, but it's light on features. Harvest (Visit Site at Harvest), which otherwise costs $12 per person per month, also offers a free version of the app, although it limits you to managing only one project at a time. Toggl doesn't include invoicing, but you can connect it to just about any other invoicing and expensing service you might use. Toggl's free tier of service, for example, is adequate for many freelancers. OfficeTime is for solo use only.įor sole proprietors, OfficeTime offers great value, but there are free versions of other apps that offer similar value. Many of those apps, however, support collaboration, meaning you can track and create invoices from not just your time spent on projects but your colleague's time, too. Other time-tracking apps generally cost somewhere in the range of $8 to $12 per month. Considering you don't pay an ongoing rate for OfficeTime, the price is low. Chemical elements, growth, and diversity of the chemical space up to 1869. Although our approach is computational rather than historical, we hope it can complement other tools of the history of chemistry.įig. By analyzing these systems, from Dalton up to Mendeleev, Gmelin’s atomic weights of 1843 produce systems remarkably similar to that of 1869, a similarity that was reinforced by the atomic weights on the years to come. To account for the role of nineteenth century atomic weights upon the system, we introduced an algorithm to adjust the space according to different sets of weights, which allowed for estimating the resulting periodic systems of chemists using one or the other weights. Emphasis of the space upon organic chemicals after 1830 prompted the recognition of relationships among elements participating in the organic turn and obscured some of the relationships among transition metals. Chemical events in 1826 and in the 1840s were driven by the discovery of new forms of combination standing the test of time. Hence, the system was already encoded in the space for about two and half decades before its formulation. Here, we show by analyzing the space between 18 that after an unstable period culminating around 1826, chemical space led the system to converge to a backbone structure clearly recognizable in the 1840s. Little is known, however, about how the expansion of the space contributed to the emergence of the system-formulated in the 1860s. The periodic system, which intertwines order and similarity among chemical elements, arose from knowledge about substances constituting the chemical space. Like the option above, New Tab Suspender uses native storage features to make sure you never have to manually dig through your browser history looking for tabs that were lost or overwritten. This is a stripped-down extension that’s very easy to use, with just a handful of features including a whitelist and the option to automatically suspend tabs after a fixed period of time. If you’re not bothered about advanced functionality and would rather just have a fire and forget solution, New Tab Suspender might be just what you need.
